Can you discuss anything with your Supervisor?
No? Then are you with the right colleague? I offer support to fellow professionals as a Relational Supervisor. I see us as sharing, be it a joy or a burden. Gentle curiosity is how I describe my approach! I place great emphasis on working in a safe, motivational and encouraging way. We can, and will regularly revisit relevant ethical guidelines and our own values. The job we do is a responsible and often tough one, so it’s important we establish within our supervision, a sound, supportive relationship which is genuinely non-judgemental.
But! There’s always room for some humour to help lighten the load too! I consider supervision should encompass both professional and personal aspects (see Self Care). Reflective practice is also a key tool in achieving balanced and rewarding supervision, which serves to keep our clients safe. A warm welcome awaits fellow professionals who might like to try a supervision session with me.
I currently provide supervision to NHS staff on a one-to-one basis and in group settings. I enjoy both environments. I attend my own supervision twice fortnightly and in peer environments 4-6 weekly to ensure my own practice is constantly reviewed. £60 per 90 minutes, some concessions
Self Care
Something we as therapists tend to forget is our own wellbeing. The special and specific nature of the work we do means we must pay attention to our own emotional, psychological and physical welfare. Whilst ensuring our clients are cared for to the nth degree, we often overlook this area! Our levels of resilience can be sorely tested due to the intensity of the work we do, so I see this as a major consideration in supervision and will help you to keep an eye on your own essential wellbeing.
